Industrial Symbiosis: INSET project launches groundbreaking curricula for tomorrow’s Circular Economy leaders
Started in December 2023, the Erasmus+ project “INSET – Industrial Symbiosis for Enterprises and Training” marks one of the most important milestones in launching its comprehensive Joint Curriculum. The curriculum introduces two pioneering training programs designed to advance Industrial Symbiosis implementation across Europe.
In response to the environmental emergency, industries increasingly shift toward sustainable production, sparking a critical need for specialized skills. INSET is designed to bridge this gap by providing targeted support in areas essential for sustainable transformation.
The curriculum introduces a revolutionary dual-profile training approach, of crucial importance to transform how industries collaborate and optimize resource usage in the circular economy era. The profiles are:

Industrial Symbiosis Manager: a strategic role focused on project management, implementation methodology, and sustainable development integration. This profile is envisioned as being able to have strategic visions to guide the transformation of industrial networks into sustainable ecosystems.

Industrial Symbiosis Planner: a technical position emphasizing data analysis, resource mapping, and opportunity identification. In this case, the profile means a technical innovator who will design the future of resource optimisation and industrial collaboration.
The Joint Curriculum features the following modules:
1.
General Context of IS: this foundational module introduces participants to the core concepts, applications, and significance of IS within the Circular Economy (CE) framework
2.
IS Planning and Managing: The module provides specific topics for each professional profile of IS manager and IS planner, to equip both with advanced tools and methodologies for data-driven IS planning, opportunity identification, and project governance.
3.
Legal and financial issues: the module is essential for both IS Managers and Planners, as it provides a comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements, legal frameworks, and financing opportunities for IS and CE projects.
4.
Communication and soft skills: the module emphasizes the importance of strategic communication and stakeholder engagement in fostering environmental awareness and sustainable practices. Both IS Planners and Managers will learn to conduct impactful awareness campaigns, select the right communication channels, and maintain consistent messaging to enhance trust and recognition.
This cutting-edge course uses innovative methodologies built on real-world case studies to bring learning directly into a practical, application-focused context.
Soon to be available as an app, INSET training offers flexible, engaging, and accessible online learning. You can follow the course anytime, anywhere, making it easy to integrate professional growth into your daily routine.
Through INSET, you will gain unique skills in cross-industry collaboration to drive innovative shared sustainability solutions and IS facilitation to maximize the value of by-products and waste streams. It is a powerful pathway to mastering high-impact expertise in sustainable practices. Designed to accelerate CE adoption across industries, the INSET curriculum equips professionals to minimize waste, enhance resource efficiency, and champion sustainable change.
Led by the University of Strasbourg and backed by expert partners, INSET is a strategic investment in the future of sustainable production.
